Mexico – Televisa confirms plans to expand presence in Mexico

Televisa has announced plans to expand its gambling operations via its network of PlayCity casinos.

According to a statement released by the company it plans to open a number of new casinos around Mexico in the near future.

Televisa opened its first PlayCity gaming centre in the state of Puebla in 2006. Since then Televisa has year on year increased its investment in the gaming industry Televisa currently operates 17 casinos and has a licence to operate as many as 55 casinos in Mexico granted to it by the Ministry of Interior (SEGOB). In the first quarter of 2015 according to local daily Millenio gaming and lottery revenue amounted to $607.368m pesos for the company. Although this made up a small part of the company’s revenue compared to its total sales it is more than the company’s radio business operations and more than was generated by its live entertainment arm. The company in the statement said that it regretted that it still had to compete with illegal gaming which remains widespread.

PlayCity houses around 6,000 electronic gaming machines in its seventeen casinos. In 2015 more than 4.5 million visitors played at its PlayCity facilities according to the latest company report. In addition the casino business achieved positive growth “in spite of certain challenges facing the gaming industry, most significantly the continuous local regulatory requirements and restrictions that affect the operation of casinos.”

Televisa has also been involved in the lottery sector since 2007. Sorteos del Trébol its lottery and raffle brand meanwhile is dedicated to commercialising number games and instant raffles. It has over 5,300 points of sale in Mexico. As well as offering traditional raffles such as Superlotto Sorteos del Trébol also encompasses sports pools games such as GanaGol.
